SharePoint 2010 Templates

I have had many people going through my classes talk about the Out of the Box experience with SharePoint. One of these features that need to be discussed when deploying SharePoint includes what templates are available at the site, list, and library levels.

The following table’s document information obtained from a variety of sources with a majority of it being SharePoint 2010 itself. If you have any additional information please feel free to contact me directly.

Asterisked (*) templates denotes new templates in SharePoint 2010.

Blog Content A site for an individual or team to post ideas, observations and expertise that site visitors can comment on. All Versions
Group Work Site Collaboration A groupware solution that enables teams to create, organize and share information quickly and easily. It includes Group Calendar, Circulation, Phone-Call Memo, Document Library and other basic lists. All Versions
Assets Web Database * Web Databases An asset database to keep track of assets, including asset details and owners. Enterprise
Charitable Contributions Web * Web Databases A database to track information about fundraising campaigns, including donations made by contributors, campaign-related events and pending tasks. Enterprise
Contacts Web Database * Web Databases A contacts database to manage information about people that your team works with, such as customers and partners. Enterprise

Document Center Content A site to centrally manage documents in your enterprise. All Versions
Records Center Data A site designed for records management. Records managers can configure the routing table to direct incoming files to specific locations. This site also lets you manage whether records can be deleted or modified after they are added to the repository. All Versions
Business Intelligence Center * Data A site for presenting Business Intelligence. Enterprise
Microsoft Project Site * Tracking A site that supports team collaboration on projects. This site includes Project Documents, Project Issues, Project Risks, and Project Deliverables lists which may be linked to tasks in Microsoft Project Server 2010. All Versions
Personalization Site Blank and Custom A site for delivering personalized views, data and navigation from this Site Collection into My Site. It includes personalization to specific Web Parts and navigation that is optimized for My Site sites. All Versions
Publishing Site Content A blank site for expanding your website and quickly publishing web pages. Contributors can work on draft versions of pages and publish them to make them visible to readers. This site includes document and image libraries for storing web- publishing assets. Standard and Enterprise
Publishing Site with Workflow Content A site for publishing web pages on a schedule by using approval workflows. It includes document and image libraries for storing web-publishing assets. By default, only sites with this template can be created under this site. Standard and Enterprise
Enterprise Search Center Search A site for delivering the search experience. The welcome page includes a search box with two tabs: one for general search and another to search for information about people. You can add and customize tabs to focus on other search scopes or result types. Standard and Enterprise
Enterprise Wiki Content, Collaboration A site for publishing knowledge that you capture and want to share across the enterprise. It provides an easy content editing experience in a single location for co-authoring content, discussion and project management. Enterprise
Basic Search Center Search A site for delivering the search experience. The site includes pages for search results and advanced searches. All Versions
FAST Search Center * Search A site for delivering the FAST search experience. The welcome page includes a search box with two tabs: one for general search, and another to search for information about people. Visio Process Repository * Content A site for teams to quickly view, share and store Visio process diagrams. It provides a versioned document library for storing process diagrams and lists for managing announcements, tasks and review discussions. All Versions

A couple of comments on these SharePoint 2010 site templates.

The variety of web databases utilizes the new Access Services found only in Enterprise version. Access Services will allow an organization the ability to take a site template or an existing Access 2010 database and make it available within SharePoint 2010.

Another really cool feature found in Enterprise is the inclusion of PerformancePoint Services. Many of the features found in PerformancePoint are made available from the Business Intelligence Center site template. This would include access to the PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer and the ability to store different dashboard components for use in other parts of the SharePoint Site Collection.

    thanks for the info. i cannot figure out how to load any of the free templates. all the guides point me to creating a site collection or using the gallery/solutions option – none of these show on my list of options. any advice?

      In SharePoint 2010 Microsoft changed the way these are deployed. They are now deployed a sandboxed solutions. All sandboxed solutions need to be deployed by going to the Site Collection top level site. In order to see those features you will need to be a Site Collection administrator. This maybe why you do not see these on your list of options. Once you have those permissions then you should see in the Galleries of that top level site an option for Solutions. Once in there you can upload the solution and then finally activate. Hope this help.
